Homemade Baby Wipes Recipes April 1, 2009

We are in the middle of house breaking 2 puppies and I’ve noticed that my children are reaching for the baby wipes more than the paper towels, which got me thinking.  Even though I buy in bulk, we are really going through the wipes lately and I thought surely there is an easier way. Plus these recipes are chlorine free and I already have most of the ingredients on hand.

Some Mom’s use cloth wipes and clean and wash along with their cloth diapers and other’s use paper towels for these recipes. I’ve used both and it really is a personal preference. Both are effective.

Here are the  recipes:

Baby Wash Recipe #1

This is the recipe I use the most. I bought a plastic shoe box storage container that will fit 2 rolls of Brauny Select a size paper towels. I unroll them from the roll and fold them like an accordion in the box. Then I double the recipe below and pour over the “wipes”.  I go through a LOT of wipes. I have NEVER had any trouble with mold, wipes drying out or  discoloration. To my knowledge none of these recipes has that problem but like I said…I use a lot of wipes and not just for diapering. The recipes with Lavender or Tea Tree essential oils make great all purpose disinfectant wipes as well.  I keep a box in our cars for quick hand wipes, on the go diaper changes etc.

  • 2 TBSP Baby Wash (choose a natural/organic wash! I like Earth’s Best by Jason)
  • 2 TBSP Olive Oil or Sweet Almond Oil
  • 2 Cups water (I use distilled)

Mix well in a spray bottle or your wipes box. Spritz on wipe before using if in spray bottle. Swish solution around over wipes if using a wipes box.

Baby Wash Recipe #2

  • 2 TBSP Baby Wash
  • 2 TBSP Olive Oil/Sweet Almond Oil or 1 TBSP Calendula Oil
  • 2 Drops Tea Tree Oil (I like either Jason’s Organics that I buy at Kroger or Aura Cacia that I purchase at a discount through the Food Co-op)
  • 2 Cups Water (I use distilled)

Mix well in a spray bottle or your wipes box. Spritz on wipe before using if in spray bottle. Swish solution around over wipes if using a wipes box. Tea Tree Oil has lovely disinfectant properties along with its wonderful, clean smell.

Aloe Vera Recipe

  • 1/4 Cup Aloe Vera Gel (I like Lily of the Desert as it is 99% pure aloe vera gelly..anything less than that and it can break down or not be effective)
  • 2 Drops Tea Tree Oil
  • 2 Cups Hot Water (I use distilled warmed in the microwave or on the stove)

Stir or shake until this recipe is well mixed. Don’t use until the mixture cools. Spritz on wipe before using if in spray bottle. Swish solution around over wipes if using a wipes box.

Vitamin E and Essential Oils Recipe

  • 2 Drops Tea Tree Oil
  • 2 Drops Lavender Oil (Please be sure to use only pure essential oils – don’t use synthetic oils.)
  • 2 Drops Chamomile Oil
  • 2 Cups Water (I use distilled)
  • 1 Vitamin E Cap

Cut open vitamin E caplet and squeeze into the water, and add essential oil drops. Mix well in a spray bottle or your wipes box. Spritz on wipe before using if in spray bottle. Swish solution around over wipes if using a wipes box.

You can premix your wipes solution and moisten a few wipes when you’re out and about. Simply place them into a re-sealable plastic bag, or into a travel wipes container and you’re ready to go. Throw them into the dirty duds bag or a plastic shopping bag along with your diapers when you use them.

Happy Diapering!

Just be sure, that you use natural stabilized aloevera for that.
Than you can be sure, that you will have a good result.
Very often you find concentrated aloevera or something thats only called aloevera on the market, like discounters or so.
If there is more than 95% pure aloevera gel inside, than its mybe ok.
And if you find a IASC sign on the product, its perfect.
Hope you find my comments helpfull

I Like to use the Organic Aloe Vera gelly I get from Lily of the Desert. http://www.lilyofthedesert.com/
It has a good consistency and is a Summer stable in our house for basic skin care (we use it year round but seem to go through more of it during the Summer months than any other season).
This is the specific product. It contains 99% Aloe Vera in it.
Does this look like the kind of product that you are recommending ?
I appreciate you taking the time to comment, it never occurred to me that someone might pick up an Aloe product that wasn’t mostly aloe.
